02/13/2019 (Nigeria) - According to local media sources on Monday, 11 February, three people were killed during clashes between members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and local police in Owerri in Imo State. Reports indicate that police were attempting to stop IPOB members who were destroying billboards of presidential candidates on Okigwe road. During the police operations the rioters attacked the police who responded with live rounds. Additionally four police officers were also shot and hospitalised. Earlier this month the IPOB has urged its members to boycott the presidential election scheduled to take place on Saturday, 16 February.
Members in Nigeria should avoid the vicinity of any political gatherings or polling stations in order to lessen the chances of being affected by incidental violence and opportunistic crime. Members should monitor local media sources for further information and heed any directives issued by the authorities.
