02/13/2019 (India) - According to local media reports, around 200 protesters from the ethnic Gujjar community blocked rail traffic and disrupted traffic at the Sakoti Tanda railway station in Uttar Pradesh's Meerut district on Wednesday, 13 February. The Gujjar community have echoed calls being made in Rajasthan for fair representation, including the reservation for their people of five per cent of jobs in government and educational institutions. Senior district and police officials attempted to move the protestors on, but having failed to do so Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF) officers have been stationed at the protest site to ensure things do not get out of hand.

Members are advised to minimise time spent in the vicinity of demonstrations and political gatherings in the region due to the risk of exposure to potential crowd-related disturbances. Travellers intending to utilise rail services in the area are advised to monitor local media sources to remain apprised of any disruption resulting from the unrest.
