02/13/2019 (South Africa) - According to local media sources, Boksburg police have confirmed that a weapons store in East Rand was robbed on Wednesday morning, 13 February by five armed men, who made off with approximately a hundred of firearms. The shop owner managed to press his panic button, but the suspects were able to flee before police arrived on the scene. No shots were fired and no one was injured. Police are investigating the scene but as yet no arrests have been made.

The incident highlights the high risk of violent crime in the Johannesburg area. Though some areas are relatively safer than others, Johannesburg as a whole experiences more violent crime than many other large cities in Africa. The use of firearms, including assault rifles, by criminals is common in the city and many robbers are quick to resort to violence if challenged. Travellers should exercise a heightened level of vigilance when travelling in the city and immediately report any suspicious activity to police.
