National 24-Hour Strike Affecting Public Transport, Port Activity

02/13/2019 (Belgium) - According to international media sources on Wednesday, 13 February, an ongoing national strike is impacting public transport services and port activity as workers demand higher pay and better working conditions. The national rail operator, SNCB said about half of its train services are currently in operation. High-speed Thalys and Eurostar trains are expected to be in operation during the strike. Dock workers are currently not loading or unloading ships in the port of Antwerp and blockades have stopped work at factories nationwide. The Brussels' metro, tram and bus operator are operating on a handful of lines. The situation is expected to be similar throughout the country. The strike is expected to last until 2200hrs (2100 UTC) today.

Members utilising public transport or port services in Belgium are advised to monitor local media for any developments on the strike situation. Contingency plans may need to be devised in the anticipation of associated delays.
