02/13/2019 (South Africa) - According to local media sources, the country's biggest labour group, the 1.6 million-member Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) staged a nationwide strike on Wednesday, 13 February to protest against job losses and high unemployment. A spokesman from COSATU said that a national shutdown had begun and workers from all sectors of the economy in the private and public sector would be joining the strike. Associated protests are also anticipated around government buildings, town squares and other popular gathering places. Further action is also planned in Cape Town on Tuesday, 19 February, a day before the Finance Minister Tito Mboweni presents the national budget.

Members in South Africa are advised to avoid the vicinity of any protests associated with the industrial action in order to lessen the chances of being affected by incidental violence and heavy-handed security response. Travellers should monitor local media for any further information on the strike and should heed any directives issued by the authorities.
