02/13/2019 (Zimbabwe) - According to local media reports, police have declined to approve a commemorative march planned by the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) opposition party due to take place on Thursday, 14 February in Harare. A peaceful march was reportedly being organised to honour the party's late founding leader and former Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, who died of colon cancer on 14 February last year. MDC activists will still reportedly gather at the Harare Show Grounds at 1000hrs (0800 UTC) and while the events are planned to be peaceful, the failure of the police to allow the subsequent march could lead to altercations between MDC supporters and security forces. Last month the government carried out a widely condemned crackdown on anti-government protests in which around 600 people were arrested and up to 16 protesters killed.

Members in Harare are advised to avoid all protests or political gatherings due to the risk of incidental violence, opportunistic crime and heavy-handed security response. Follow local media outlets for further information on the situation and any associated disruption.
