02/13/2019 (Philippines) - According to local media sources on Wednesday, 13 February, the local government of Kawayan, Biliran Province has declared an outbreak following a steady increase in the number of dengue cases reported in the province. The municipality has recorded 81 cases in recent months with many of them being admitted to hospital with one confirmed fatality, a five-year-old boy from Barangay Tucdao. Other barangays with reported dengue cases are Burabod, Ungale, Madao, Balacson, Balite, Poblacion and Villacornejo.

As there is no curative treatment for dengue, preventative measures and early detection are considered the best practices to minimise contraction. Members are advised to use DEET-based mosquito repellent and wear long, loose clothing to prevent mosquito bites; premises should be checked on a daily basis for potential mosquito breeding habitats. Travellers are also advised to monitor the local media to remain abreast of outbreak-related developments and other public health announcements.
