02/13/2019 (Somalia) - According to a press release by the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) on Wednesday, 13 February, two airstrikes were carried out by AFRICOM targeting al-Shabaab militants in the Janaale area of Lower Shebelle Region. The airstrikes were conducted on Monday, 11 February in partnership with Somali forces, who were leading an operation against al-Shabaab in the area. AFRICOM assesses that the first airstrike killed eight militants and the second strike killed four more. It is not believed any civilians were injured or killed in either strike.

Somalia remains an extreme risk operational environment and, as such, all travel should be undertaken with the strictest possible security risk management protocols in place. All operationally-critical movement outside of secure compounds should be conducted in coordination with a reputable security provider and local authorities.
