East Libyan Forces Claims Full Control of El Sharara Oilfield; Reports Unconfirmed

02/12/2019 (Libya) - International media sources reported on Monday, 11 February, that Eastern Libyan military forces have full control of Libya's biggest oilfield, El Sharara, a spokesman for the Libyan National Army (LNA) said. The spokesman said that the LNA had peacefully with no resistance taken full control over the oilfield and all its associated facilities. There was no immediate confirmation or comment from state oil firm North Oil Company (NOC) which operates with foreign partners the 315,000 barrels-per-day (bpd) field in Libya's southern desert. Pictures posted online showed jubilant soldiers standing in front of an El Sharara signpost, although media sources were unable to confirm this information. On Wednesday, 6 February, the Libyan National Army (LNA) reached a remote pumping station of El Sharara, but had until now not moved on the main field.
Members should reconsider all non-essential movement outside of secure compounds in Libya given the current instability and conflict situation. Libya remains an extreme-risk operational environment and all those working in the region need to ensure that they remain vigilant at all times and monitor local media sources for situational updates. Security measures and contingency plans should be continually reviewed and updated so as to remain commensurate to the local threat environment.
