02/12/2019 (Myanmar) - According to local media sources on Tuesday, 12 February, hundreds of local residents are demonstrating against the recent erection of a statue to Major General Aung San in the city of Loikaw in Kayah State. Local police have set up barricades along the road leading to the statue which protesters have attempted to disassemble. Police have used tear gas and rubber bullets in order to disperse the demonstrators. The monument is located at the Kayah State office of the National League for Democracy (NLD) party and has caused an increase in social tensions since its erection. Similar demonstrations were held last week with over a hundred participants and dozens arrested. Further unrest in Loikaw is likely.

Those in Loikaw should avoid the vicinity of any demonstrations in order to lessen the chances of being affected by incidental violence and police operations. Members should monitor local media sources for further information and heed any directives issued by the authorities.
