02/12/2019 (Myanmar) - According to international media sources, six people were killed and one person injured in a landslide in a mining region in Kachin state in the early hours of Sunday morning, 10 February. The landslide occurred at a jade mining site near a village in Hpakant when a 30 metre (90ft) cliff wall collapsed, trapping six jade scavengers in the mine. An investigation into the incident is underway by local authorities. Mining accidents in the region are not uncommon and many people make their living in the illegal jade scavenging trade, which leads to a lack of regulated mining.

Members are advised to expect potential travel disruption in the vicinity of the incident due to the recovery operation. Monitor local media sources for further updates on the incident. It is recommended that personnel ensure that international standard safety regulations are in place when carrying out mining or industrial operations across the country.
