02/12/2019 (Libya) - According to regional and international media sources, seven militants were killed during clashes with the eastern-based military on Sunday, 10 and Monday, 11 February in the eastern city of Derna. A military source reported that violent clashes began on Sunday and lasted till midday Monday as militants looked to protect their remaining pocket of control in the old town in central Derna. There were reportedly no military casualties in the fighting and the source claimed that the remaining militants in the area would be forced out within the next few days. 12 soldiers were reportedly killed in fighting with militants last week. Derna was under the control of the Shura Council of Mujahideen in Derna from 2015 till 2018, when they were defeated by the Libyan National Army, led by Khalifa Haftar. However, pockets of various resistance elements to LNA rule have remained, including the Derna Protection Force (DPF).
Due to the ongoing conflict, Libya remains an extremely high-risk environment, and all non-essential travel to the country should be avoided. Members undertaking operationally critical deployments to Libya are advised to monitor local media and to liaise with local authorities in order to increase situational awareness and be aware of areas of high levels of conflict or particularly unstable zones.
