6.6, 6.8 and 6.5 Magnitude Earthquakes Strike One after Another Off the Coast of British Columbia

10/22/2018 (Canada) - According to emerging media and seismologist sources on Monday, 22 October, three plus six magnitude earthquakes, and a 4.9 magnitude earthquake, have occurred off the coast of British Columbia. A 6.6 magnitude earthquake at a depth of 11km (7miles) was recorded at roughly 1239Hrs (0539UTC) around 218km (135 miles) southwest of Port Hardy. Following on from that, a 6.8 magnitude earthquake at a depth of 10km (6.2miles) was recorded shortly after, at 1316Hrs (0616UTC), 197km (122 miles) in the same area. At roughly 1322hrs (0622UTC), a 6.5 magnitude earthquake was also recorded 223km (138 miles), at a depth of 10km (6.2 miles). This was then followed by a 4.9 magnitude aftershock at 1336hrs (0636UTC), 223km (138miles) at a depth of 17.8km (11miles). There are no current reports of damage or injuries and there is no active tsunami warning. However, as the reports are emerging, more information is awaited.
Travellers should maintain extra vigilance in the event of potential further seismic activity and aftershocks. Monitor local media outlets for situational updates, and heed any directives given by the authorities.
