10/22/2018 (Congo (Kinshasa)) - According to local media and social media reports, Mai-Mai militia carried out an attack on an Armed Forces of Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) position in Taliata, a town east of Beni near the Paida district in North Kivu on Monday morning, 22 October. A military spokesperson has said that one militant was killed in the attack, while other sources have reported that two civilians have also been killed. The attack comes after five militiamen and one FARDC soldier were killed on Thursday, 18 October in an exchange in Isale in the Bashu chiefdom near Beni. On Saturday, 20 October suspected Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) militants clashed with FARDC troops in Beni and Oicha, during which 13 militants were reportedly killed.
Due to the escalating violence around Beni and other parts of North Kivu province, all non-essential travel to the region should be reconsidered. Members in the eastern provinces of the DRC are advised to monitor local media sources and liaise with in-country contacts to remain apprised of security-related developments in their particular area of operations. Travellers should heed any directives issued by security forces and local authorities and abide by any extraordinary security measures which may be in place.
