10/22/2018 (Gabon) - Campaigning resumed on Saturday, 20 October ahead of the second of Gabon's Legislative Elections on Saturday, 27 October. The ruling Gabonese Democratic Party won 74 of the 143 parliamentary seats in the National Assembly during the first round of elections on Saturday, 6 October. 61 constituencies will vote in the second round. Voter turnout was relatively low in the first round of voting, at 58 percent, in what is the first election since a presidential race two years ago which was marred by deadly violence and fraud allegations. Demonstrations and political rallies are to be anticipated during the week of campaigning ahead of the next vote. Heightened security measures are likely in the vicinity of any political rallies.

Members in Gabon are advised to remain clear of any political gatherings and demonstrations in order to minimise the risk of exposure to potential crowd disturbances and incidental violence. Travellers should monitor local media sources for further updates on political gatherings in the lead up to the elections and heed any directives issued by local authorities.
