Fatality Following Attempted Attack on Cardinal in Mexico City

10/22/2018 (Mexico) - According to media sources on Monday, 22 October, at least one person has died following an attempt to force entry into the home of Roman Catholic Cardinal Norberto Rivera. The death, believed to be one of Norberto Riveras bodyguards, occurred when an unknown man tried to deliver a parcel to the home of Rivera. The assailant then proceeded to shoot the guard at the entrance but was later forced back when other guards returned fire. The Cardinal was inside the home at the time of the attack, however, remained unharmed.

Those in Mexico City are advised to remain well clear of the area until verification can be obtained that the security situation has stabilised. Travellers should anticipate disruptions in the vicinity of the market area in the short term as a result of an ongoing emergency response. Members are further advised to maintain a heightened sense of situational awareness and report any suspicious persons, items or activity to security forces.
