10/22/2018 (Turkey) - The Turkish Coast Guard has reported that two people have died and an unknown number of people are still unaccounted for after a boat carrying migrants sank into the Aegean Sea just 50m (164ft) off the Bodrum district of the Mugla coast on Monday, 22 October. The incident occurred at 0547hrs (0247 UTC) and around 17 people have been rescued and three had made it to shore by themselves, although at least 30 people are reported to have been on board the vessel. Search and rescue efforts for those still missing are ongoing. No detail has been given about the nationality of those on the vessel, but Turkey has been a main route for migrants trying to cross to Europe to escape conflicts and poverty in Syria and other neighbouring regions.
Members in the Bodrum area are advised to avoid the vicinity of the incident due to the ongoing search and rescue operation. Due to the large number of migrants attempting to illegally from Turkey to Europe, those travelling by sea in the area should be aware of heightened security around the coastlines and at ports.
