10/22/2018 (Mexico) - According to the U.S. National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Willa is likely to develop from a Category 4 into a Category 5 hurricane on Monday, 22 October and is forecast to produce life-threatening storm surge, wind and rainfall over portions of the southwestern and west-central Mexican coast on Tuesday, 23 October. A hurricane warning is in effect for San Blas to Mazatlan, including Las Islas Marias and a tropical storm warning is in effect for Playa Perula to San Blas and north of Mazatlan to Bahia Tempehuaya, which means hurricane and tropical storm conditions respectively are expected somewhere within the warning areas in the next 36 hours. Willa had maximum sustained winds of 155mph (250km/h) early on Monday and the hurricane centre forecast 6 to 12 inches (152 to 304mm) of rain may fall on parts of western Jalisco, western Nayarit and southern Sinaloa states. These downpours may lead to flash flooding and landslides in mountainous areas. A dangerous storm surge is likely along portions of southwestern Mexico by Tuesday night, especially near to the south of where Willa makes landfall, and this may be accompanied by large waves.

Members in the aforementioned states are advised to pay close attention to local media sources for weather-related updates. Members should maintain a heightened level of situational awareness, review contingency plans and heed any directives issued by local authorities, including evacuations. Both overland and air journeys should be reviewed to ensure that they are not affected by the weather system and motorists should take extra caution due to hazardous driving conditions. Members should avoid all coastal and maritime activities where possible in the coming days.
