10/22/2018 (Croatia) - According to reports in local media, workers from the Uljanik shipyard in Pula began a strike on Monday, 22 October over unpaid salaries for September. 1,500 workers reportedly protested in front of the management building, before going out of the shipyard and into Pula itself. This is the third strike by Uljanik Group workers this year, with the latest being resolved in September after a deal was structured with the government to sort out unpaid July and August wages. Uljanik Group owns two shipyards in Pula and Rijeka but after clients cancelled shipbuilding contracts during the last strike, the company still faces financial hardship. The workers have threatened to take their protest to Zagreb, as they have done during previous strikes, if their demands are not met.
Members in Pula are advised to avoid the vicinity of any protests associated with the strike in order to minimise the risk of exposure to potential unruly crowd behaviour, incidental violence, and heavy-handed police response. Monitor local media for the latest developments on the industrial action and any associate protests.
