10/22/2018 (Ghana) - Students at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi mounted roadblocks and vandalised property during protests on Monday, 22 October. The students are protesting over what they see as unwarranted brutality by campus security and university management. The students were reacting to an incident on Friday night, 19 October, when 11 students were arrested by police during a party which had been banned by university authorities, with one of the students being injured while being arrested. KNUST's Student Representative Council called on students to boycott lectures on Monday and called for a peaceful protest, during which they called for the vice-chancellor top step down. However, the situation turned violent and initially the police and latterly the military have been deployed to try and restore order on campus.

Members in Kumasi are advised to avoid the vicinity of the campus due to the ongoing protest and potential for clashes between students and security forces. Monitor local media sources for the latest developments on the situation and adhere to any directives issued by local authorities.
