10/21/2018 (Mexico) - According to meteorological specialists on Sunday, 21 October, a newly formed tropical storm, Willa, is expected to strengthen into a Category 1 hurricane by Wednesday, 24 October, with the potential to strengthen further to a major Category 3 or above hurricane. Willa, which is currently sitting off the coast of Acapulco, is to begin moving into an environment that is well suited to rapid strengthening, according to meteorological experts. Willa is expected to make landfall as a hurricane in Sinaloa or Nayarit around Wednesday 24 or Thursday 25, bringing potential flooding, mudslides, damaging winds and storm surge flooding. The danger of Willa is then further increased with its potential to combine with another large tropical storm in the region, Vicente. According to meteorological specialists, the storms could combine, making joint landfall between Mazatlan and off the coast of Puerto Vallarta. With this, around 100-200mm (4-8 inches) of rain can be expected from Sinaloa to Jalisco, Colima and coastal Michoacan, with a max rainfall of 300mm (12 inch). This will significantly increase the risk of widespread flooding and mudslides across western and southwestern Mexico.

Members should anticipate potential travel-related disruption and risks arising from heavy rains and possible flash floods. Monitor local news for updates on the situation and plan accordingly. Maintain extra vigilance when travelling on roads and heed any directives given by the authorities.
