10/21/2018 (Maldives) - On Sunday, 21 October the Maldives Supreme Court rejected a bid by defeated President Abdulla Yameen to annul the results of last month's presidential election, in which he lost to Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. Yameen initially conceded defeat before calling on his supporters to protest the outcome of the election and submitting a petition claiming the vote was rigged. Yameen himself also faces allegations of corruption. Following the Supreme Court's decision, further protests by Yameen's supporters are likely, particularly in the capital Male and Addu City on Addu atoll.

Members in the Maldives are advised to maintain a heightened level of vigilance due to the ongoing tension surrounding the election result. Any demonstration or political gatherings should be avoided in order to minimise the risk of exposure to incidental violence, opportunistic crime and heavy-handed security response. Monitor local media outlets for the latest developments on the political situation and any associated protests.
