10/21/2018 (Pakistan) - Pakistan could be facing a fuel supply shortage after oil tanker operators began an indefinite country-wide strike from Sunday, 21 October. The All Pakistan Oil Tankers Association (APOTOA) has resorted to industrial action after the government failed to address grievances they had raised over issues including the compulsorily phasing-out of old tankers, a lack of facilities provided at terminals and a perceived favouritism from the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) towards their favoured companies. APOTOA reportedly gave the government ten days to address these concerns before going ahead with the strike, but the issues were not resolved. Some other oil tanker associations are not supporting the strike, so some fuel supply will not be disrupted. Demonstrations associated with the strike are also anticipated.

Those in Pakistan should anticipate possible fuel shortages and a surge in demand for alternative means of transport during the strike, leading to disruption to overland. Members are advised to revise journey plans and should conserve fuel where possible by not making unnecessary journeys. Members are advised to avoid any political protests or demonstrations associated with the strike due to the risk of exposure to incidental violence, opportunistic crime and heavy-handed police response. Monitor local media outlets for the latest updates on the industrial action and any information regarding its resolution or likely fuel shortages.
