Explosive Device Detonates at Marketplace in Manipur Prior to Planned Visit of Chief Minister

10/20/2018 (India) - Local news sources have reported on an explosion in a marketplace in Manipur's Kangpokpi district in the early hours of Friday, 19 October. The explosion occurred at around 0110hrs (1940UTC, Thursday, 18 October) several hours before a planned visit of the state's Chief Minister, N Biren Singh. The minister was due to visit the site to lay a foundation stone for a planned women's market. No one was injured in the blast and police have opened an investigation into the incident, they have also announced plans to increase security to mitigate against such violent acts in the future.

Those in Manipur are advised to avoid the vicinity of any political rallies or demonstrations due to the possibility of further attacks and ongoing security operations. Travellers should monitor local media sources for any further information and heed any directives issued by the authorities.
