10/20/2018 (Afghanistan) - According to local media sources on Saturday, 20 October, two police officers have been injured while trying to defuse an improvised explosive device (IED) at a polling station, in a northwestern neighbourhood of Kabul. Further to the two police officers, two civilians were also injured in the incident due to being in the vicinity of the device when it went off. Afghanistan is bracing itself for a day of attacks and disruption as the country goes to the polls for parliamentary elections. The country is especially on edge following the recent high profile insider attack on Kandahar's chief of police, General Abdul Raziq. The Taliban have vowed to disrupt the electoral process as much as possible, so more violence is expected.
Afghanistan remains an extremely high-risk operational environment, and deployments should only be undertaken with the strictest possible security risk management procedures in place. Members should maintain a low profile and use a vetted security provider that offers close protection and emergency response services. Minimise time spent in the vicinity of security checkpoints, security headquarters and government buildings, as these are among the primary targets for militant attacks.
