Teachers Union Announces New Nationwide Strike on 23 October; Avoid Associated Demonstrations

10/20/2018 (Colombia) - The Federation of Educators of Columbia (FECODE), which represents over 300,000 teachers across Columbia, has announced that it is planning to hold a 24-hour nationwide strike on Tuesday, 23 October. According to the union, the strike will coincide with similar action by students and other university employees, who are already on strike. Demonstrations associated with the strike are expected to take place in Bogota and other major urban areas across the country. Heightened security measures and traffic disruption are anticipated around all protest sites and clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out. University students and faculty are already striking over the government's decision to allocate on 12 percent of what unions requested to be allocated to the education budget, and the teacher strike is to add its support to the ongoing action.
Members across Columbia are advised to avoid all protests and demonstrations associated with the strike in order to minimise the risk of exposure to incidental violence, opportunistic crime and heavy-handed security force response.
