10/20/2018 (Afghanistan) - According to local media sources, Afghanistan has closed its border with Tajikistan as a security measure during its parliamentary elections on Saturday, 20 October. Tajikistan has the longest border of any country with Afghanistan, stretching some 1,400km (870 miles). Voting in some parts of Afghanistan has had to be extended until Sunday, 21 October, after technical issues and organisational problems at polling centres. It is not clear whether this means the border closures will be extended. Confusion over biometric voter registration equipment, polling stations not opening on time, missing election materials and delays forcing lengthy queues are behind the issues with Saturday's voting and has angered many voters.

Members in Afghanistan are advised to exercise heightened caution during the election due to an increased risk of violence at polling sites, and should minimise time spent in the vicinity of polling stations. Members planning on conducting overland travel between Tajikistan and Afghanistan will need to review travel plans and may need to find alternative routes.
