KDF Soldiers Kill Multiple in Suspected Retaliatory Attack in Barmiil, Gedo

10/19/2018 (Somalia) - According to unconfirmed local media reports on Thursday, 18 October, Kenyan Defence Force (KDF) troops have shot dead three members of the same family in Barmiil village, near Geriley in Gedo. A further four people were reportedly injured in the incident, which some reports suggest was a retaliatory attack by the soldiers after their vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device (IED).
Travellers should be aware that Somalia is considered an extreme risk operational environment and, as such, all travel should be undertaken with the strictest possible journey management protocols in place. Members should ensure that personnel and site security measures are continuously reviewed so as to remain commensurate with the prevailing local threat environment. All movement outside of secure compounds should be conducted with a reputable security provider and in coordination with security forces in order to avoid areas with high levels of militant activity or active security operations.
