10/19/2018 (New Zealand) - State Highway 1 has been closed between Paekakariki and Grays Road at Mana in the Wellington region all day on Friday, 19 October after a truck carrying hazardous goods overturned shortly before 0400hrs (1500 UTC 18 October). Lorries in particular have been affected by the incident as well as those travelling out of the capital for a weekend break during the summer holidays. Light vehicles are able to use the Paekakariki Hill Road as an alternative route in and out of the capital, but the New Zealand Transport Agency is warning motorists to be careful on what it describes as a 'tight, tortuous route', and increased traffic could lead to congestion along this route. Meanwhile lorry drivers are being forced to wait it out, with the road not likely to be opening again until late Friday night. Flow-on effects from the disruption is likely to be felt for freight nation-wide and services could suffer due to a lack of deliveries.
Members in the Wellington area are advised to monitor local media sources for the latest information on the incident and associated disruption. Members conducting overland travel are advised to review their itineraries and amend routes accordingly to avoid any delays associated with the road closure.
