10/19/2018 (Afghanistan) - According to emerging media reports on Friday, 19 October, the upcoming parliamentary elections in Kandahar are to be suspended for at least a week, following a Taliban attack on and subsequent death of General Abdul Raziq, the commander of Kandahar Police Force. On Thursday, 18 October, a bodyguard opened fire on a group of officials leaving a meeting at the Kandahar provincial governors office, killing Abdul Raziq and severely injuring Zalmai Vyasa, the provincial governor of Kandahar. Security within Kandahar has been reinforced following the attack, with military and commando units now reportedly stationed throughout the city. Along with Kandahar, Ghazni province has also had its elections suspended due to political tensions throughout the region.
Afghanistan remains an extremely high-risk operational environment, and deployments should only be undertaken with the strictest possible security risk management procedures in place. Members should maintain a low profile and use a vetted security provider that offers close protection and emergency response services. Minimise time spent in the vicinity of security checkpoints, security headquarters and government buildings, as these are among the primary targets for militant attacks.
