General Election Scheduled for 14 November; Avoid Political Rallies and Public Gatherings

10/19/2018 (Fiji Islands) - Fiji is preparing for a general election on Wednesday, 14 November, its second such election since returning to a parliamentary democracy in September 2014. Many political rallies, public gatherings and other electoral-related events are anticipated to take place across the nation as the campaign period ramps up. Eight parties will contest the election, which with voting taking place from 0730hrs to 1800hrs (1930 13 November to 0600 UTC) on 14 November, however people in certain remote areas will be asked to vote during a five day period a week beforehand, from Monday, 5 November to Friday, 10 November. Increased security presence and localised traffic disruption are anticipated around election-related events.

Members in Fiji are advised to avoid the vicinity of any political rallies, public gatherings or other electoral-related events in order to minimise the risk of exposure to crowd disturbances and incidental violence. Monitor local media for the latest information on events in your particular area of operations in order to minimise any impact on business continuity. Overland travel should be reviewed in order to ensure journeys are not disrupted by election-related events.
