10/18/2018 (Venezuela) - According to local media sources on Wednesday, 17 October, at least three people, including a new-born baby, have died in the country after power outages in 16 states left hospitals without power. The explosion of an electrical transformer in the interior of the country is said to be the reason for the latest power outage, which left large parts of the country without power on Monday, 15 October and Tuesday, 16 October. Large-scale power outages have become a common occurrence in the country, and severely impact the ability of health workers to care for their patients. In recent months power outages have had a tendency to spark protests in the country.

Members in Venezuela should monitor local media sources for further information and updates on the power outage in their particular area of operations. Contingency and business continuity plans should be reviewed in light of the recent power outage, and the current uncertain power supply situation in Venezuela. Travellers should avoid the vicinity of all demonstrations and political gatherings in Venezuela due to the risk of exposure to potential crowd disturbances, incidental violence and opportunistic crime as well as aggressive police crowd dispersal operations.
