Multiple Killed in Head-On Vehicle Collision near Chikhutu, Mchinji

10/18/2018 (Malawi) - At least 14 people have been killed and a further 11 injured in a vehicle collision which occurred on the evening of Tuesday, 16 October. The incident reportedly occurred near Chikhutu village in Mchinji district when an overloaded pick-up truck collided head-on with a goods vehicle. The casualties were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Road travel presents significant hazards in Malawi, with road traffic fatality rates among the highest in the world. Roads are in a generally poor state, with secondary roads almost impassable during the rainy season between November and April. Only travellers experienced in Malawian conditions are advised to consider self-driving. Other travellers should secure the services of a reputable transportation company.
