Ongoing Protest Forces Road Closures in Atlantis, Western Cape

10/18/2018 (South Africa) - Social media sources report at 0915hrs (0715 UTC) on Thursday, 18 October, of an ongoing protest in and around the town of Atlantis, approximately 40km (25 miles) north of Cape Town. The protest has left most roads in the area closed and the situation is very tense and there is a high presence of police and traffic in the area, according to the Western Cape traffic chief in a public statement. It is not immediately clear what the reasons for the protest are.
Members are advised to avoid the vicinity of the protests, due to the potential for incidental violence and aggressive police response. Monitor local media for travel-related updates and plan any journey in advance to minimise the risk of travel disruption.
