Evacuations Ordered for Thousands after Landslide Blocks River near Menling, Tibet

10/18/2018 (China) - Around 10,000 people have been evacuated following a landslide in Tibet that blocked the flow of one of the region's key rivers, emergency services reported on Thursday, 18 October. A barrier lake has formed on the Yarlung Tsangpo, the headwater of India's Brahmaputra River, following the Wednesday morning collapse of a cliff in the deep valley through which the river flows. No deaths or injuries have been reported China has reportedly been keeping India updated on the blockage, which could potentially affect water levels in lower regions. The landslide struck near a village in Menling and water in the lake had risen to a height of 40 meters (131 feet) by Thursday.

Members in the affected area should expect travel disruption during the aforementioned period and should factor delays into their itinerary. Travellers within affected areas are advised to closely monitor weather-related updates through local media outlets and remain alert to any further instructions from authorities. Motorists are further exercise heightened caution when undertaking travel due to likely hazardous driving conditions.
