10/18/2018 (Afghanistan) - Emerging local media sources on Thursday, 18 October, report that Kandahar police chief General Abdul Raziq was killed in an attack after a high-profile meeting in Kandahar. Reportedly, two American soliders were also injured in the attack and have been medically evacuated for treatment of their injuries. The incident happened when officials were leaving the governor's office en route to a helipad. Among those who had been at the meeting were General Scott Miller, top US Commander in Afghanistan and other high profile officials. Sources also say the attack was initiated by at least one of the governor's bodyguards. However, no official comment has yet been made by the government. Further information is awaited.

Afghanistan remains an extremely high-risk operational environment, and deployments should only be undertaken with the strictest possible security risk management procedures in place. Members should maintain a low profile and use a vetted security provider that offers close protection and emergency response services. Minimise time spent in the vicinity of security checkpoints, security headquarters and government buildings, as these are among the primary targets for militant attacks.
