10/17/2018 (Niger) - At least 30 suspected criminals have been killed during cross-border security operations by the armies of Niger and Nigeria, according to a statement released by Niger's interior minister on Tuesday, 16 October. Gangs have reportedly been operating in an area of dense forest between the Maradi area of southern Niger and the border with Nigeria, kidnapping residents and stealing cattle. Authorities claim they are now in full control of the region.
Due to the threat of violent crime and unrest, those operating in Maradi region are advised to conduct a thorough localised threat assessment and ensure that all travel is undertaken in coordination with a trusted private security provider. Travellers should exercise a heightened level of situational awareness in the area and immediately report any suspicious activity or items to security forces.
