10/17/2018 (Guinea) - Clashes reportedly broke out during protests in the city of Kindia over the election of a new mayor. The incident occurred on Tuesday, 16 October, when a group of youths took to the street, stopping traffic. The clashes broke out between the protesters and security forces and the demonstration quickly became a riot, with shops and businesses burned down and around 32 people injured by gunshots from homemade rifles. The city reportedly remains tense following the violence.

Members are advised to closely follow local media outlets for details of any further protests planned over this issue. All political gatherings should be avoided due to the risk of incidental violence, opportunistic crime and heavy-handed security response.
