10/17/2018 (Yemen) - Media reports on Tuesday, 16 October, indicate that a French national who was kidnapped in Hodeida in June, after he was forced to dock in the Yemeni port, has been released. It is reported that the release came after intensive talks between a French envoy and the Houthi leaders in Sanaa. However, it is currently unclear whether a ransom was paid. The man's release was reportedly secured following negotiations between local tribal leaders and Omani intermediaries. Oman has previously used its diplomatic connections with Houthi authorities to track down foreign nationals kidnapped in Yemen.

Due to the risk of kidnap for ransom in Yemen, travellers are advised to exercise a high level of situational awareness when travelling, especially in unfamiliar environments. In order to reduce the risk of kidnapping, travellers should maintain a low profile; keep travel itineraries discreet and vary travel routines, including routes, timings and vehicles. Due to the ongoing conflict and extreme risk environment, members should reconsider all non-essential travel to Yemen at this time. Members in Yemen should limit non-essential movement outside of secure compounds and only travel with maximum security precautions in place.
