10/17/2018 (Ecuador) - According to local media sources, three people were lynched in Posorja, Guayas State, on Tuesday, 16 October, following accusations that they were suspected child-abductors. The three victims were originally detained by the Community Police Unit (UPC) before rumour spread they were suspects in a kidnapping, which had led to hundreds in Posorja protesting. The protesters then entered the detention centre armed with stones, sticks and Molotov cocktails, abducted the suspects and murdered them, before setting fire to police vehicles. It was then revealed that the victims were originally arrested on robbery, not murder charges.
Members in Guayas State should monitor local media for situational updates due to the potential for further unrest in the Posorja area. Maintain a heightened level of caution and awareness, whilst heeding any directives given by the authorities.
