Red Alert Issued In Six Departments Due to Flooding

10/17/2018 (Nicaragua) - According to local media sources on Wednesday, 17 October, a Red Alert has been issued for the departments of Nueva Segovia, Matagalpa, Jinotega, Chinandega, Leon and Managua due to flooding caused by heavy rains. At least one road in Managua department has been severely damaged due to floods. Thus far there have not been any reports of significant damage caused to the city of Managua. Over 1,400 people have been affected by the floods thus far nationwide. According to the National Hurricane Centre (NHC), a low-pressure system has formed west of Nicaragua which has a high chance of developing into a cyclone over the next 48 hours. According to the NHC, the weather system is forecast to move west, away from Nicaragua.
Members in affected areas are advised to monitor local media sources for further weather and flood-related updates and heed any directives issued by local authorities. Drivers should exercise a heightened degree of caution in flood-affected areas due to likely hazardous conditions caused by flooding and debris.
