Two Strong Earthquakes Strike off East Coast; No Tsunami Warning Issued

10/16/2018 (New Caledonia) - According to an alert issued by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), two large earthquakes have struck 170km (105 miles) to the east of Tadine, New Caledonia. The first, a magnitude 6.3 quake, struck at 0028 UTC on Tuesday, 16 October. The earthquake reportedly had a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles). The second, with a magnitude of 6.8, struck at 0103 UTC, also with a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles). There have been no reports of damage and a tsunami warning has not been issued.
Travellers should maintain extra vigilance in the event of potential followup seismic activity and aftershocks. Monitor local media outlets for situational updates, and heed any directives given by the authorities.
