Typhoid Fever Outbreak in El Salvador; Consider Vaccination if Travelling to Remote Interior Areas

06/23/2018 (El Salvador) - The Salvadoran Minister of Public Health stated on Monday, 18 June, stated that 26 municipalities of the country are currently affected by an epidemic outbreak of typhoid fever. Authorities declared that 644 cases have been already registered and that most cases were reported in the in the municipalities of Santa Ana, Chalatenango and San Salvador, specifically, Apopa, Mejicanos, Soyapango and San Salvador. Vaccination is recommended when going outside the areas usually visited by tourists such as travelling extensively in the interior of the country.

Members in the country should monitor local media sources for any further information and heed any directives issued by the authorities. The disease can spread through person-to-person contact and has the potential to disseminate quickly. Symptoms include a high temperature, stomach pain, headache and constipation/diarrhoea. Treatment for Typhoid fever involves antibiotic injection. Travellers who exhibit any of the aforementioned symptoms should seek the opinion of a medical professional immediately.
