Police Use Tear Gas to Scatter Opposition Protest outside Al Qassam Mosque, Moroni; Prominent Politician Arrested

06/23/2018 (Comoros) - Local media sources report on Friday 22 June, that security forces have scattered with teargas a crowd of political opponents to President Azali Assoumani outside of the Moroni's Al Qassam mosque, also known as Grand Mosque du Vendredi. At least seven people have been arrested, among them Mahmoud Ahmed Wadaane, leader of the RIFAID (Island Reformers Facing Development Imperatives) political party and opposition candidate during the 2016 Comorian presidential election. Mahmoud Ahmed Wadaane was transferred to the hospital after suffering injuries following his arrest. Further protests are likely to be staged by the political opposition to notably after the Friday prayer outside of the Al Qassam mosque.

Members are advised to avoid the vicinity of the protests due to the risk of incidental violence, opportunistic crime and heavy-handed crowd dispersal methods. Members should also closely follow local media outlets for updates on the proposed reforms and any associated unrest.
