06/22/2018 (Mali) - On Thursday, 21 June, the Azawad Salvation Movement (MSA) militant group released a statement on social media reporting several casualties after a MSA's patrol has been ambushed by armed men in Azar, Menaka Region. The identity of the assailants has not been confirmed, but it is likely that they are militants belonging to the Islamic State in the Great Sahara (ISGS) group operating in the cross-border area between Mali and Niger.

Members with operationally-critical travel requirements in the Menaka region of Mali should first conduct a thorough localised threat assessment and subject all movement to stringent security risk management procedures. Travellers are advised to liaise with security forces and local authorities to identify areas with ongoing security operations in the region. Contingency measures should be continually reviewed and updated so as to remain commensurate with the local threat environment.
