Several Fatalities After Alleged Islamist Militants Attack Litandacua Village, Cabo Delgado's Macomia district

06/22/2018 (Mozambique) - Local media sources report that on Tuesday, 19 June, at least four villagers were killed and more than 40 houses were set on fire by alleged members of the local Islamist militant group Al Shabaab at approximately 2200hrs (1900 UTC) in the village of Litandacua located in the administrative post of Chai, Cabo Delgado's Macomia district. As a result of the incident, military forces have been dispatched in Litandacua to reinforce the security presence in the area. A similar attack on Wednesday, 6 June in the district of Macomia resulted in seven dead and more than 160 houses burned.

Members in Cabo Delgado Province and surrounding areas are advised to exercise a heightened level of vigilance due to the rising threat of violence. Any suspicious activity or items should be reported to security forces and stringent security and journey management protocols should be adopted, particularly for travel to rural areas. Members are advised to monitor local media and consult in-country sources for further updates on the security situation in their particular area of operations.
