Security Forces Raid Multiple Houses in El Aaiun and Smara; Avoid the Area

06/22/2018 (Morocco) - On Thursday, 21 June, Moroccan security forces have raided multiple houses in the population centres of El Aaiun and Smara. At least ten people have been reportedly arrested by the security forces. Those arrested have been targeted by Moroccan forces due to suspected pro-Sahrawi activism. Spontaneous demonstrations have erupted in the two cities following the raids. The incident comes one day before a UN envoy is due to visit the region on Saturday, 23 June. Further security operations are likely in the following days.

Members in Western Sahara are advised to remain vigilant and closely monitor the situation in the territory. Travellers should be aware that Western Sahara remains a high-risk operational environment and any required deployments should be only be undertaken following a thorough location specific threat assessment.
