06/22/2018 (Cambodia) - According to media reports, dozens of people gathered in front of government offices in Sre Ambel town in Koh Kong province on Thursday, 21 June. The purpose of the protest was to demonstrate against alleged land grabbing by two sugar cane companies and a Chinese development firm in Chikhla commune of Sre Ambel district. The protesters claim the land should be spared for agricultural purposes, such as rice farming. Demonstrations over this issue also took place on 19 June in front of the Land Management Ministry in Phnom Penh. Further such protests are likely.

If possible, travellers should avoid the immediate vicinity of protests, and closely monitor local media outlets for related developments. Travellers are reminded that all forms of political assembly should be avoided due to the risk of exposure to potential crowd disturbances and incidental violence. Limit non-essential movement or vacate the area if in close proximity to any ongoing protests, and avoid travel to areas where such demonstrations are anticipated to occur.
