06/22/2018 (Armenia) - In a statement released on Friday, 22 June, Armenian Chief of Police Valery Ospiyan claimed that over 30 members of various criminal groups had been arrested following citywide raids in Yerevan. The raids, which occurred on Wednesday, targeted various known organised crime groups suspected of drug trafficking, racketeering and corruption. Amongst the groups targeted were the offices of the Yerkrapah Volunteers' Union paramilitary group, where officers uncovered weapons, ammunition and various army supplies.

Clients in Yerevan are advised to monitor local media sources for further information on the arrests and any associated security operations in their area and should heed any directives issued by police or local authorities. Whilst violent crime against foreign travellers is rare, crowded market areas and dimly lit streets in Yerevan are higher risk areas in terms of criminal activity. Organised crime is widespread in Armenia, and shoot-outs between rival gangs may occur in public places, posing a threat of exposure to indiscriminate violence.
