06/22/2018 (Madagascar) - According to media reports, at least six people were injured after a bush taxi was ambushed by armed bandits near Maevatanana, Betsiboka region on Wednesday, 20 June. The bandits, armed with rifles and knives, blocked the road with tree trunks and stripped the victims of their phones, jewellery and money. It is further alleged that the leader of the group amputated the hands of the passengers using an axe. Police are currently searching for the perpetrators and have, as of Thursday, arrested eight suspects.

Members in rural Madagascar are advised to limit non-essential overland travel unless familiar with the local environment and threat profile. Those utilising public transport should be aware that bus services tend to be crowded, unreliable, and are often targeted by petty criminals, especially at night. Travellers should ensure that transport providers use well-maintained vehicles and professional drivers.
